Sadie approves next song DePere jamming

De Pere, Wisconsin: a quiet little town attached to the south end of Green Bay. You might call it a suburb, but then again a De Perian might shove his foam cheesehead down your throat if you did.

Mike lived in a quaint old 'hood, but the band awakened an urge in us to make noise and destroy quietude and quaintness.

We practiced once a week or so. Gary and I usually rode together and met Mike. Or we arrived and waited a few minutes until Mike got home from work. Or maybe we waited a half hour or two. Or maybe Jody got there and we decided, “I don't think Mike’s gonna make it tonight,” and go home.

At least we got to play with Sadie, Mike's dog - just about the friendliest dog alive. I still get sad knowing she's not around anymore.

It felt awesome to plug in my guitar. If I couldn't hear the bass, I upped the old volume a bit. Then Gary couldn't hear his Strat, so he also jacked up his volume. Jody started banging his drums harder at that point, sweat flying around like the home-brew at Wino Park, and Mike's vocals involuntarily cranked themselves up, veins popping on his neck.

This went on until we realized we were screaming at each other to be heard and our ears were bleeding. Strangely, no neighbors complained about their cracked windows.

Basically, we had a blast. We mastered Gary's original compositions and took stabs at dozens of cover songs. We went back out to the garage for smoke breaks, mocking the lame bands we'd knock off future stages.
